Ladytron

Ladytron is a UK electronic band from Liverpool, active since 1999. The group’s core line-up consists of Helen Marnie, Mira Aroyo, Daniel Hunt and Reuben Wu, with Pop Levi listed as a member. Their music is associated with electronic, electroclash, synthpop, electropop, electronica, dream pop and electronic rock.

Formation and early work

Daniel Hunt and Reuben Wu meet in Liverpool in the 1990s and begin working together as producers and DJs. Hunt also founds the indie label Invicta Hi-Fi and a nightclub. Wu studies Industrial Design at Sheffield Hallam University, graduates in 1997, and works as an industrial designer at Team Consulting Limited until 2002. The name Ladytron comes from the Roxy Music song of the same name.

The duo record the debut single “He Took Her to a Movie” with guest vocalist Lisa Eriksson. It appears in July 1999 and receives positive reviews. Later in 1999, Hunt and Wu meet Helen Marnie and Mira Aroyo, who join as vocalists and keyboard players. Marnie studies music at the University of Liverpool and receives a BA in pop music in 1999. Aroyo works as a postgraduate research geneticist in Oxford University’s Biochemistry department.

Recordings and releases

Ladytron issue the EP Miss Black and Her Friends in December 1999 in Japan only, followed by Commodore Rock in 2000 and Mu-Tron EP later in 2000. Songs from these early EPs, apart from “Miss Black” and “Olivetti Jerk”, are later used on the debut album.

The band releases seven studio albums: 604 (2001), Light & Magic (2002), Witching Hour (2005), Velocifero (2008), Gravity the Seducer (2011), Ladytron (2019) and Time’s Arrow (2023). They also release the live album Live at London Astoria 16.07.08, the compilation Best of 00-10, and EPs including Extended Play, The Harmonium Sessions and Ace of Hz EP.

604 is largely written by Daniel Hunt and co-produced with Lance Thomas. The album is supported by the singles “He Took Her to a Movie”, “Playgirl” and “The Way That I Found You”. In the same period, the band covers The Human League’s “Open Your Heart” for Reproductions: Songs of The Human League.

Light & Magic is co-produced with Mickey Petralia in Los Angeles and has a darker sound than the debut. It produces the underground tracks “Seventeen”, “Evil” and “Blue Jeans”, and the band tours for more than a year in support of it.

Witching Hour is co-produced with Jim Abbiss and combines live drums and guitars with the group’s established electronic style. It is supported by “Sugar” and “Destroy Everything You Touch”, the latter becoming the band’s signature song. After this album, the group also releases Extended Play, a two-disc CD/DVD set with remixes, B-sides and a 27-minute documentary about the China tour, and The Harmonium Sessions, which contains reworked versions of four songs from Witching Hour.

Velocifero is recorded in Paris and co-produced by the band with Alessandro Cortini and Vicarious Bliss. The album has a more organic sound and harsher beats, and is followed by the singles “Ghosts”, “Runaway” and “Tomorrow”. The remix collection Velocifero (Remixed & Rare) appears in 2009, along with the live album Live at London Astoria 16.07.08.

Gravity the Seducer is recorded in the Kent countryside and produced with Barny Barnicott. The singles “White Elephant” and “Mirage” are issued from it, and “Ambulances” is premiered during the album cycle. In 2010, the soundtrack for FIFA 11 features “Ace of Hz”, which later appears on the Ace of Hz EP.

Style and collaborations

The band’s sound is usually described as electropop with new wave and shoegaze influences. Across their career, they remix tracks for Dave Gahan, Goldfrapp, Placebo, Blondie, Bloc Party, Kings of Convenience, Gang of Four, She Wants Revenge, Soulwax, Nine Inch Nails, Simian, Indochine and Apoptygma Berzerk.

Ladytron also co-write and produce “Birds of Prey” and “Little Dreamer” for Christina Aguilera, both of which appear on Bionic.

Live work and touring

Until 2004, the band wears uniforms on stage. Hunt says the look is inspired by the film The Andromeda Strain. From the Light & Magic era onward, Ladytron tour extensively and add live musicians for bass and drums. Touring members include Pop Levi, Andrea Goldsworthy and Keith York.

The group tours in Europe, North America, South America, Asia and Australia, and appears at festivals including Reading, Coachella, Pukkelpop, Exit, Bonnaroo and Electric Picnic. They also play shows in China as part of a British Council exhibition tour, open for acts including Soulwax, Björk, Goldfrapp and Nine Inch Nails, and co-headline a North American tour with The Faint.

Helen Marnie begins a solo career in 2012 under the name Marnie and releases the solo album Crystal World in 2013, produced in Reykjavik by Daniel Hunt with Barði Jóhannsson.
