La Bouche

La Bouche is a German-American eurodance group from Frankfurt am Main, formed in 1994 by record producer Frank Farian. The project is built around dance and pop music and is associated with bubblegum dance, bubblegum pop, EDM, electro, euro house and eurodance. The group is best known for the singles “Be My Lover”, “Sweet Dreams”, “You Won’t Forget Me” and “S.O.S.”

Formation and original line-up

Farian creates the music with techno DJ Ulli Brenner and producer Amir Saraf, while American singer Melanie Thornton and American rapper and singer Lane McCray act as the front performers. Thornton and McCray have already worked together before La Bouche is formed. The duo’s name is French for “The Mouth”.

Albums and releases

The group releases the studio albums Sweet Dreams and A Moment of Love. After Thornton leaves in 2000 to pursue a solo career, Farian releases “In Your Life”, a previously unreleased track using earlier vocals from Thornton and McCray. He also issues the compilation The Best of La Bouche featuring Melanie Thornton, which combines Thornton’s solo material with La Bouche recordings.

Later years

Thornton dies in the Crossair Flight 3597 crash near Zurich, Switzerland, in 2001. McCray continues to perform worldwide under the La Bouche name. In 2015, Hungarian-born singer Sophie Cairo joins the group as the official vocalist, and a remix called “Sweet Dreams 2017” appears with vocals from McCray and Cairo.
