L Devine

L Devine is an English pop singer and songwriter from Whitley Bay, in the United Kingdom. Born Olivia Rebecca Devine, she works under the stage name L Devine and is associated with pop, electronic, indie pop, indie and electropop. She signs to Warner Bros. Records and BMG.

Career

Devine releases her debut single, “School Girls”, in 2017. Her debut EP, Growing Pains, follows later that year and includes five tracks. The EP is accompanied by a ten-minute visual directed by Emil Nava, with most of the film shot in Newcastle. She then releases the EP Peer Pressure in 2018, along with a short film also directed by Emil Nava.

The title track “Peer Pressure” opens with a line from the 1988 film Heathers. Devine has said that she likes coming-of-age films, and Charli XCX contributes backing vocals to the track after producer Justin Raisen plays it to her and she asks to record a version. The single also has a music video released on her YouTube channel. Around the release of the EP, YouTube Music names Devine to its Ones to Watch list for 2019, and BBC Radio 1 adds her track “Nervous” to the BBC Introducing playlist.

Later releases and collaborations

In 2019, Devine performs at The Great Escape Festival and releases the single “Naked Alone”. She also co-writes two songs released that year: “Mean That Much” by Rudimental and “Next Mistake” by Icona Pop. In 2020, she releases the singles “Boring People” and “Don’t Say It”. Her third EP, Near Life Experience: Part 1, follows in 2021, preceded by the lead single “Girls Like Sex”.

Alongside her solo work, Devine co-writes for other artists, including Icona Pop and Rudimental. She also receives a special edition of tmrw magazine, created in partnership with her and devoted entirely to her work.
