Kyle Hall

Kyle Hall is a DJ and producer from Detroit, Michigan, known for deep house and related Detroit club sounds. He is born in 1991 and starts making music at a young age, developing a reputation as an early prodigy. His work also connects with house, soul and dubstep, and he is associated with the Detroit underground.

Early development and influences

Hall begins learning to DJ at 11, when local Detroit figure DJ Raybone Jones teaches him to mix records and introduces him to music history. After a friend points him towards the Vibes record store in Oak Park, Detroit, he comes under the wing of owner Rick Wilhite of 3 Chairs, who broadens his understanding of underground deep house. In 2005, he attends a class on the production software Reaktor 5 taught by Mike Huckaby, gives Huckaby a mix CD, and receives early support that helps lead to radio and club work.

At 16, he meets Omar-S after watching him DJ, and the two become friends. Omar-S acts as a supporter of Hall's work, including releasing a mixtape made entirely of Hall productions.

Recordings and style

Hall releases music on Hyperdub, R&S Records and Planet E, the label run by Carl Craig. His productions reflect the influence of Detroit deep house artists such as Moodymann, Rick Wade, Theo Parrish, Rick Wilhite, Omar-S and Mike Huckaby. He often works within house music, but also uses looser hip-hop rhythms and draws on a broader tradition of American soul, with prominent melodies, heavy bass and jazzy keyboard textures.
