Kurtz

Kurtz is a group active since 1998. The name is used by several acts, including a London, UK guitar-and-drum duo, a sludge and groove metal band from Atlanta, Georgia, and a four-piece alternative rock band from Devon, UK. The London group is part of the Soundmaker Records stable and is based around twin brothers Frederick and Ralph Fuller, who are from Wakefield.

London duo

The London KURTZ line-up uses one baritone guitar, a drum kit and extensive pedal effects. Its instrumental material ranges from punk-influenced riffing to darker, expansive soundscapes. The brothers record the EP +1 in an old Victorian toilet under Kentish Town Road with Adam B. Daniels. Tracks named in connection with the release include Run Faster, DDD and Skyscraper. The duo also uses live visuals at performances, and Frederick often plays guitar on the floor among the audience when possible. The band is noted for improvisation in concert and for a very loud stage volume.

Other acts using the name

The Atlanta sludge/groove metal band self-releases the demo A Metal Heritage for Young America in 2004. It records five tracks, receives mixed reviews, and takes its name from Colonel Walter E. Kurtz, a character in Apocalypse Now. The Devon alternative rock band is a four-piece signed to the Spinning Sister independent label, and its debut EP appears in 2024. The name also appears for a Swedish rock band and a digital music composer from France.
