Kurt Vile & the Violators
Kurt Vile & the Violators is a US psychedelic rock band associated with Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The group draws on lo-fi, psychedelic and classic rock, and is led by Kurt Vile on guitar and vocals.
Line-up and activity
The project begins as a vehicle for Vile’s songs and later operates as a band identity for his recordings and performances. The current and historical line-up in the available information includes Jesse Trbovich, Steve Gunn, Rob Laakso, Kyle Spence, Mike Zanghi and Kurt Vile. Earlier references also name Jesse Turbo on guitar and slide, Mike Zeng on percussion, and Adam Granduciel on guitar and bass.
Vile and Granduciel have played together since the early 2000s and contribute to each other’s projects, most notably in The War on Drugs, which Granduciel fronts.
Releases and related work
The band releases the The Hunchback EP on Richie Records in 2009. Vile describes the Violators name as belonging to a fixed group of musicians, comparing the approach to Neil Young & Crazy Horse, where the name applies only when the same players perform together.
