Kumbia Queers

Kumbia Queers is a group from Buenos Aires, Argentina, active from 2007 to the present. The band works across cumbia, punk rock and reggaeton, and develops a queer, punk-inflected approach to cumbia.

Formation and line-up

The group brings together musicians from several other acts. Its core members are Juana Chang and Patricia Pietrafesa. The lineup also includes Pilar Arrese, bassist and guitarist of She Devils, Inés Laurencena, who also plays with She Devils, and the Mexican musician Ali Gua Gua, who is also active in Las Ultrasónicas, Afrodyke and as DJ Guaguis. Depending on whether the band performs in Mexico or Argentina, the keyboards are played by Rocktavia Golden, from Juana Chang & The Wookies, or by Fernanda Martínez, an Argentine singer-songwriter based in Mexico City.

Style and repertoire

Kumbia Queers build cumbia versions in Spanish of songs by artists including The Cure, Black Sabbath, Madonna and Nancy Sinatra. Their material combines punk attitudes with cumbia arrangements and queer-themed lyrics, and the group describes its songs as songs “for girls, by girls.”
