Kruder & Dorfmeister
Kruder & Dorfmeister are an Austrian electronic duo from Wien, formed in 1993 and made up of Richard Dorfmeister and Peter Kruder. They are best known for downtempo, chillout and trip-hop remixes, and are also associated with acid jazz and drum and bass. Their remix work often brings in bossa nova and jazz elements, and includes versions of songs by artists such as Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, Depeche Mode, Roni Size and Madonna.
Early releases and recognition
In 1993 the duo releases the four-track EP G-Stoned, which includes the hypnotic track “High Noon” and a cover that echoes Simon & Garfunkel. The record receives critical attention, particularly in the UK, and Gilles Peterson plays “High Noon” on his show, later known as Worldwide.
Remix work and The K&D Sessions
Although Kruder & Dorfmeister are most closely identified with remixing, their original compositions also form part of their output. Their remixes are collected on the 1998 double album The K&D Sessions, which becomes one of their key releases.
Live work and related projects
The duo develops a reputation across Europe for live DJ performances. Richard Dorfmeister also works with Rupert Huber as Tosca. Peter Kruder releases a solo album under the name Peace Orchestra in 1999 and later records Peng Peng in 2006 with two other musicians as Voom Voom on !K7.
G-Stone Records and later work
Kruder & Dorfmeister own the G-Stone recording studio and G-Stone Records, which issues releases by the duo as well as by acts including Peace Orchestra, Dub Club and Sugar B. In 2010, the label and duo mark 16 years of activity with the compilation Sixteen F**kin Years Of G-Stone Recordings and the development of the K&D Sessions Live show. That production includes visuals by longtime G-Stone VJ Fritz Fitzke and MC appearances by Earl Zinger and MC Ras T-Weed, and it appears at events including The Big Chill and Berlin Festival before touring internationally.
