Krallice

Krallice is a New York black metal group active since 2008. The line-up centres on Colin Marston, Mick Barr, Nick McMaster and Lev Weinstein. The band also works with other musicians at times, including Dave Edwardson of Neurosis on Loüm and Mass Cathexis / Mass Cathexis 2 - The Kinetic Infinite.

Style and background

The group’s music sits within black metal, but it also draws on progressive, technical, experimental, avant-garde, death metal and doom metal approaches. Their songs are often long and change shape within the track, with a clear emphasis on technical playing and progressive structures. Their sound is described as relatively clean for black metal, and it is sometimes compared with Weakling, though with less focus on droning dissonance.

Members and related projects

Colin Marston plays in Gorguts, Behold... the Arctopus, Byla and Indricothere, among others. Mick Barr also appears in Crom-Tech, Orthrelm and Octis. Nick McMaster and Lev Weinstein come from the death metal band Astomatous.

Releases

Krallice releases a large amount of material, often at close intervals. The self-titled debut appears on Profound Lore Records in 2008, followed by Dimensional Bleedthrough the next year on the same label. Diotima follows in 2011, again on Profound Lore, with vinyl editions of these early records issued by Gilead Media. In 2011 the band also releases the free EP Orphan of Sickness and the flexi-disc single Traditional, which appears with an issue of Decibel.

Years Past Matter is self-released in 2012, and Ygg huur follows in 2015, also self-released. The EP Hyperion appears in 2016, though its material dates from 2013. Later in 2016 the band releases Prelapsarian through Gilead Media.

In 2017 Krallice issues Loüm with Dave Edwardson, then Go Be Forgotten. In 2019 they release the EP Wolf, remastered editions of the first four albums collected separately and as The Wastes of Time, and the live album Rot and Waste Live. Mass Cathexis follows in 2020 with Edwardson again contributing vocals. Demonic Wealth appears in 2021 and is recorded by the members separately, with Marston handling the guitars and mastering, Barr recording vocals, and the drums recorded on a cellular phone. Crystalline Exhaustion and Psychagogue follow in 2022, with the band swapping roles so that Barr plays bass, McMaster plays guitar and Marston uses keyboards. Porous Resonance Abyss appears in 2023, and later that year the band releases Mass Cathexis 2 - The Kinetic Infinite, which they describe as two EPs presented as one album. An additional release, Inorganic Rites, appears in 2024.
