Kontiki Suite
Kontiki Suite is a British indie pop and psychedelic group from Leeds. The band forms around songwriters Richard Formby and Chris Hooson, and also includes Ben Singh and Jonny Singh on rhythm and lap steel guitars, Marcus Dodds and Mario Renucci on lead and bass guitars, and Chris Brown and Craig Bright on drums and percussion.
Style and influences
The group’s sound draws on melody, harmony, psychedelia and country, with a strong country-rock element. Their influences include The Beatles, The Beach Boys, The Byrds, Buffalo Springfield, the Burrito Brothers, Big Star, Bob Dylan, the Brian Jonestown Massacre, Beachwood Sparks, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and Blazin’ Squad.
Releases and airplay
Kontiki Suite releases a debut CD, Stars EP, in 2009 and receives national airplay on Steve Lamacq’s BBC Radio 2 show and Tom Robinson’s BBC Radio 6 Music show. The album On Sunset Lake follows, presenting the same emphasis on melody, harmony, psychedelia and country-rock.
