Koloto
Koloto is the pseudonym of UK producer and multi-instrumentalist Maria Sullivan. Raised in Canterbury, she starts composing and recording music in her early teens and first learns guitar before moving on to other instruments.
Background and musical development
Sullivan plays and tours with a number of bands before focusing more fully on her own electronic work. She spends five years as bassist in the math rock group Delta Sleep. Alongside band activity, she continues to experiment with composition and develops software to manipulate and process sound in increasingly detailed ways. That interest in technical sound design becomes a defining feature of her work as Koloto.
Koloto
The Koloto name appears in 2013, after she self-releases a set of tracks that attract significant online attention. The project builds a growing listener base and receives coverage from music press including XLR8R, Dummy, and Dots and Dashes. Her music also receives international radio play on BBC Radio One, ABC National, and France Inter.
