Kollektiv Turmstrasse

Kollektiv Turmstrasse is a German electronic music group from Wismar, active since 1999. The project is initiated by Nico Plagemann and Christian Hilscher, who also come from northern Germany and meet through the regional live music scene before developing a long-running collaboration.

Background

Nico Plagemann is born in 1979 in Wismar and starts working with electronic music at 14 through the early tracker and demo scene. He begins programming his own tracks with Scream- and Fasttracker, then moves on to hardware instruments, which turns the hobby into a deeper commitment to music production. Christian Hilscher is also born in 1979, in Boltenhagen, and begins making music with tracker tools. After playing at open-air and underground parties, he concentrates on DJing, event organisation and electronic music culture.

The two musicians meet at a live gig, exchange contacts and build a friendship around their shared interests. Over time they invest heavily in music equipment and make Kollektiv Turmstrasse their main activity.

Style and releases

Early tracks are influenced by Detroit techno and acid house, later moving towards dubby groove techno associated with labels and artists such as Raummusik, Mosaik and Basic Channel. Their first release appears in 2001 on Electronic Parliament. The group’s work is rooted in electronic, electronica and techno, with an emphasis on minimal and minimal techno styles.
