Koffee

Koffee is a Jamaican deejay, rapper, singer and guitarist from Spanish Town, Jamaica. Born Mikayla Victoria Simpson, she releases music under the name Koffee. Her work draws on reggae and dancehall, with rap also part of her style.

Early releases

In 2017, Koffee releases her first single, “Legend”, performed with vocals and acoustic guitar. The song pays tribute to Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt and becomes a viral hit on Instagram. Before signing to Columbia Records UK, she releases five singles.

Debut EP and themes

Koffee’s debut EP, Rapture, appears on Columbia Records UK in 2019. One of its singles, “Raggamuffin”, addresses gun violence and what she presents as governmental neglect of young people. Her lyrics are shaped by violence and social problems she says she witnesses while growing up.

Influences and associated names

She cites Protoje, Chronixx, Super Cat and Giggs among her musical influences.

Visuals and hometown connection

The video for “Throne” presents a tour of her hometown, Spanish Town. The track debuts on The Fader in January 2019.
