Kissing Chaos

Kissing Chaos is an Austin, Texas band that begins as a side project involving members of Pop Unknown. After the departure of Pop Unknown’s singer and the band’s subsequent split, the remaining members turn the project into a full-time group in the summer of 2002.

Background and line-up

The band features the bulk of Pop Unknown alongside former members of Mineral and Sparta. It emerges from a lineup with experience in several related underground rock groups, and it develops into a separate act rather than remaining an occasional project.

Sound and influences

Kissing Chaos draws on new wave, metal, hardcore and punk rock. The members name Depeche Mode, Metallica, Slayer, Fugazi and Minor Threat among their shared influences. Their style is sometimes described as a mix of Quicksand and The Cure, with the band presenting itself through a blend of new wave and heavier rock elements.

Lyrics and themes

The band’s lyrics focus on depression, failed relationships, communication breakdown and broader social problems.

Releases and activity

The debut CD-EP Enter with a Bullet follows the formation of the full-time band. The group also plans a debut full-length release for early 2004.

Live activity

In its early period, Kissing Chaos builds a reputation in Austin and also plays shows on the east and west coasts. Among the bands it plays with are Hot Rod Circuit, Recover, Taking Back Sunday, Piebald, Midtown, Koufax and Brand New.
