Kiran Ahluwalia
Kiran Ahluwalia is a Canadian singer and composer of Indian music and world music, known for her work in ghazal, the sung-poetry form that develops in 14th-century India. She is from Patna, Canada, and studies and performs in the female vocal and Indian/world genres.
Early training and background
Ahluwalia starts studying Indian music at the age of seven. She first learns in India, then continues after immigrating to Canada with her parents. While in school, she studies music part time alongside her high school and university education. Her mother helps her learn songs by writing down lyrics from the radio when recordings are not easily available.
After completing a university degree in Toronto, she returns to India to pursue ghazal and Indian music full time. She spends several years in Bombay, Hyderabad and Punjab studying Indian classical music, ghazals and Punjabi folk songs.
Ghazal and musical development
Ahluwalia seeks out Vithal Rao, one of the last living masters of ghazal and the last living court musician of the king of Hyderabad, as a teacher. Through him, she connects with the older court tradition in which princes and kings employ musicians to set ghazal poetry to music. She later becomes known as one of the leading composers of contemporary ghazals, rather than only performing the established repertoire.
Her performances and compositions draw on the many emotional themes of ghazal poetry, including love, longing, ecstasy, despondency and unrequited desire. She also develops a reputation for explaining the form in clear modern terms when performing live.
Recordings and recognition
After about ten years away, Ahluwalia returns to Toronto and records her first commercial CD. That release receives a JUNO Award nomination. In 2004, she wins a JUNO Award for her second CD, Beyond Boundaries.
Her self-titled international debut album appears on Triloka/Artemis in 2005. She later records another album for Times Square Records in North America and World Connection in Europe.
Performance career
Ahluwalia performs in concert in Canada, India and Pakistan. Her bicultural background shapes her approach to composition, arrangement and audience engagement, and she works to present ghazal as a living form with contemporary Canadian lyrics as well as classical poetic traditions.
