King

King is a British new wave group from the United Kingdom, active from 1984 to 1986. The line-up consists of Paul King, Tony Wall, Mick Roberts and Dave Berk. The group is identified with mid-1980s British new wave and pop.

Background

King forms after the break-up of the ska revival group the Reluctant Stereotypes, in which Paul King performs as vocalist. The band is formed in Coventry, Warwickshire in 1983 and makes its debut supporting the Mighty Wah!. It signs to CBS Records.

Career

King tours extensively and builds a sizeable following, but its first three singles and the album Steps In Time sell poorly. Its breakthrough comes in late 1984 when it supports Culture Club and reaches a wider teenage audience. The single Love And Pride follows and reaches number 2 in the UK chart, while the album reaches number 6. Later in the year the band has another Top 10 hit with Alone Without You.

The group disbands in 1986. Afterward, Paul King pursues a solo career and later works as a video disc jockey for MTV.

King is remembered for its new wave pop sound and for its distinctive image, including spray-painted Dr. Martens boots and Paul King’s public persona.
