King Woman
King Woman is a US doom metal and shoegaze group from San Francisco, formed in 2009 by vocalist Kristina Esfandiari. It begins as a solo project and later expands into a full band. The group’s line-up includes Kristina Esfandiari, Peter Arensdorf, Colin Gallagher, Joey Raygoza, Patrick Hills and Sky Madden.
Style and sound
The band is associated with doom metal, drone, post-metal, post-rock, rock, sludge metal and shoegaze. Its music combines drone and metallic shoegaze textures with the slower, heavier atmosphere of doom, and it is often described through dark, hazy and melancholic imagery. The lyrics are personal and introspective, dealing with religious and mental torment.
Releases
King Woman’s debut EP, Doubt, appears in 2014 on The Flenser, a San Francisco avant-garde label. The group signs to Relapse Records in 2016. Its first full-length album, Created in the Image of Suffering, is released through Relapse and recorded with engineer Jack Shirley at the Atomic Garden. The album contains seven songs and presents a dense, distorted doom-rock sound. The band’s album Celestial Blues follows later.
Context
King Woman’s early work establishes the band as a project that moves from solo beginnings into a broader ensemble while remaining focused on heavy, atmospheric songwriting. Its recorded output shows a continuing link between shoegaze texture and doom metal weight.
