Khromata

Khromata is a San Francisco-based electronic artist and DJ associated with psychedelic, progressive trance and psytrance, with a focus on psybreaks and breaks. The project is described as a psy-trance and psydub / psybreak act from Bangkok, Thailand, now based in San Francisco.

DJ work and style

Khromata begins DJing in 2010, after a long-standing interest in DJing that spans 13 years before that point. Her sets move across a wide range of styles, from drum and bass to psydub, although she is best known for psybreaks and psychedelic trance. She is described as having a signature style that is fun, funky and distinctive, built around technical control, creative mixing and a focus on taking dancers through a coherent journey.

She also works as a resident DJ and organiser for Pulse SF, and as a label DJ for Digital Om Productions and Rune Recordings. Pulse SF is a psychedelic trance event production crew, Digital Om Productions is a psytrance label based in India, and Rune Recordings is a breakbeat label based in Ukraine.

Performances and scene involvement

Khromata plays across undergrounds, renegades, warehouses, festivals, clubs and raves, both in and out of state. She also appears in online mixes and as a guest on radio shows, and is noted for opening and closing sets for international headliners. Her work is linked to different dance music scenes and audiences, while remaining centred on her own sound.

Background and academic interests

Her interest in dance music extends beyond performance into academic study. She focuses on sociology and anthropology, and writes about the cultural implications of dance music. Her senior college thesis examines transnational psychedelic trance culture and spirituality.
