Kataklysm

Kataklysm are a Canadian death metal band from Montréal, formed in 1991 and active since then. Their line-up has included Maurizio Iacono, Jean-Francois Dagenais, Stéphane Barbe, Max Duhamel, Sylvain Houde, Martin Maurais and Nick Miller. The band is associated with death metal, melodic death metal and metal, and is known for a Canadian death metal style.

Early years and sound

The band first builds a reputation in the underground metal scene after releasing the demo The Death Gate Cycle of Reincarnation in 1992. Early on, their fast and technical approach is described as the “Northern Hyperblast”. In 1994 they sign to Nuclear Blast and issue the EP The Mystical Gate of Reincarnation.

Albums and line-up changes

Kataklysm release their debut album Sorcery in 1995, followed by Temple of Knowledge in 1996. That album includes the band’s first music video, for “The Awakener”. After its release, vocalist Sylvain Houde leaves the group because of personal and emotional difficulties. Maurizio Iacono moves from bass to vocals, while Stéphane Barbe joins on bass. From that point, Iacono and guitarist JF Dagenais lead much of the band’s creative direction.

In 1998 the band release Victims of this Fallen World, their first album with Iacono on vocals. This marks a shift towards a more groove-oriented and melodic death metal sound. The Prophecy (Stigmata of the Immaculate) follows in 2000 and brings in stronger thrash metal elements. Epic: The Poetry of War appears in 2001 and extends the melodic side of their sound.

Shadows & Dust arrives in 2002 and becomes one of their most commercially successful releases, also giving them their first chart placements in several European countries, including Germany, Austria and Switzerland. The album includes “In Shadows & Dust”. In 2004, Serenity in Fire is released; drummer Max Duhamel is temporarily replaced by Martin Maurais because of injury. The album features “As I Slither” and “The Ambassador of Pain”. Duhamel returns for In the Arms of Devastation in 2006, which brings the band their highest sales and chart positions up to that point.

Later releases and recognition

Prevail is released in 2008 and continues the band’s commercial growth. Its single “Taking the World by Storm” becomes one of their most viewed songs online. In the same year, Kataklysm perform at Bloodstock in the United Kingdom. They later release Waiting for the End to Come in 2013 and Of Ghosts and Gods in 2015, both of which receive positive reviews. Of Ghosts and Gods wins a Juno Award for Best Heavy Metal Album.

The band tour North America with In Flames in 2017. Meditations comes out in 2018 and becomes their first album to enter the Billboard Top 100, reaching number 61 and giving them some of their strongest international chart results. Unconquered follows in 2020. Around this period, drummer Oli Beaudoin leaves and James Payne takes his place. Kataklysm continue touring in Europe in 2023, and release their fifteenth studio album, Goliath, in 2023.

By 2024, the band have released fifteen studio albums, two EPs and two DVDs.
