Kane Strang

Kane Strang is a musician from Dunedin, New Zealand, whose work sits in folk pop and psychedelic folk pop. He works as a solo artist and sometimes performs with a band.

Early work

Strang co-founds the band Dinosaur Sanctuary with friends and releases A Public Toilet Told Me Nothing Gets Better with them. He then moves to Germany and makes his first solo recording, the demo A Pebble and A Paper Crane. That recording is made in a German World War II bunker, using a German language programme despite him not speaking German, and the bunker lights turn off on a timer during the sessions.

The song “Winded” from that demo reaches number three on Pop Lib’s list of top ten songs of 2013.

Albums and label work

Strang’s first album, Blue Cheese, is recorded while he is house-sitting, and the setting shapes its loose, restless sound. His second album, Two Hearts No Brain, is his first studio recording and is made at Chick’s Hotel Studio, which is known for being haunted. The album is released by Dead Oceans, the indie label that signs him after his style draws attention.

His first single, “Oh, So You’re Off I See”, is released with his first album.

Touring and reception

Strang later tours the United States and Europe, with the United States being his first tour outside New Zealand. He also says that he does not want to repeat the sound of his earlier work. His song “My Smile Is Extinct” has more than 6.5 million views on YouTube.
