Kampfar

Kampfar is a Norwegian pagan black metal group from Fredrikstad, formed in 1994. The band is associated with black metal, pagan black metal and viking metal, and its music is inspired by Nordic nature, folklore and myths. The name Kampfar translates to Odin or Wodan.

History

The band forms from the remains of Mock, and appears in the early Norwegian black metal scene. After a demo in 1995, Kampfar releases its self-titled EP in 1996 on Season of Mist, followed by the full-length Mellom skogkledde aaser in 1997 on Malicious Records.

Kampfar is initially a studio-focused project and does not play live shows for several years. It then releases the EP Norse in 1998 and the album Fra underverdenen in 1999, both on Hammerheart Records. The band begins its first live shows in 2004.

Later releases and label history

After signing to Napalm Records, Kampfar releases three albums on that label: Kvass in 2006, Heimgang in 2008 and Mare in 2011. These releases receive positive responses from critics and listeners. The band then completes its contract with Napalm.

Kampfar’s later releases include two singles that lead into the sixth full-length album, Djevelmakt, which comes out on Indie Recordings in 2014.
