Kacey Musgraves

Kacey Musgraves is an American singer-songwriter from Golden, Texas. She is associated with country, contemporary country, country pop, alternative country, americana and easy listening.

Early life and beginnings

Musgraves begins singing publicly at the age of 8 and writes her first song at 9. She releases a self-titled self-released album before moving to Austin in 2008.

Recording and releases

In Austin, she is discovered by the independent label Triple Pop and records the songs “Apologize” and “See You Again” for the label. In 2012, she signs with Mercury Records, later listed as Mercury Nashville, and releases her solo debut single “Merry Go ’Round”.

“Merry Go ’Round” appears on Same Trailer Different Park, her album produced and co-written by Shane McAnally and Luke Laird. The album is released in 2013 and becomes a major early release in her career.

Recognition and writing credits

The album receives nominations at the 2014 Grammy Awards for Best New Artist, Best Country Album and Best Country Song. It also wins the Academy of Country Music award for album of the year.

Musgraves also writes for other artists. Her co-written song “Mama’s Broken Heart” appears on Miranda Lambert’s album and is ranked by Rolling Stone at number 26 in its list of the 50 best singles of 2011. She also contributes material for multi-platinum artists including Martina McBride and Miranda Lambert.

Influences and performances

Her musical influences include Loretta Lynn and John Prine, as well as Cake and The Beach Boys. She opens for Willie Nelson, Lady Antebellum in Europe and Alison Krauss in the United States.
