Juliette Ashby

Juliette Ashby is a London-based singer and songwriter working across soul, acoustic, reggae and R&B. Born and brought up in a North London suburb, she grows up in a musical household and is first taken to see Stevie Wonder when she is six weeks old. Her father is a musician who plays electric violin, piano and guitar, and he founds the first global entertainment news network, later known as WENN.

Early writing and recording

Ashby writes her first song at seven, while travelling in Greece. The song is a country number called “Place In My Heart”. As a child, she and Amy Winehouse meet at nursery and become close friends. By the time they are ten, they are writing and performing songs, dances and raps together under the name Sweet & Sour, with Ashby as Sweet and Winehouse as Sour.

Winehouse goes with Ashby to her first recording studio session with American songwriter and producer Alan Glass, who has worked with artists including Kenny G, Aretha Franklin and Earth, Wind & Fire. Together they record three self-written songs: “Spindarella”, “Glam Chicks” and “Boys ...Who Needs Them”. Ashby continues to write and record with Glass and builds a catalogue of more than 50 tracks.

Later life and work

After her parents divorce when she is a teenager, Ashby keeps writing and recording music. She later lives in London with her partner Peter-Paul and continues to record and write, including “Hoping”, a song written for her late friend Amy Winehouse.
