Julian Marley is a reggae and singer-songwriter from London, Jamaica. He is the son of Bob Marley and Lucy Pounder, and his childhood is split between England and Jamaica. He belongs to the Rastafarian house of the Twelve Tribes of Israel.

He learns several instruments, including keyboard, drums, bass, guitar and a range of percussion instruments. His development as a songwriter begins early, and at the age of five he records his first demo tape at the Marley family’s Tuff Gong studio in Kingston, using Bob Marley’s “Slave Driver”.

In 1989, he and his brothers Ziggy Marley and Stephen Marley become active partners in Ghetto Youth International, a production company. He also works within Ghetto Youths International, a musical collective whose core members include Julian and his brothers Stephen and Damian Marley. His brothers are also part of The Marley Brothers.

During the 1990s, he forms his own band, the Uprising band, and tours as a solo performer backed by that group. He opens for Ziggy Marley and the Melody Makers on their US tour and appears on the Lollapalooza festival tour. He also assists Stephen Marley with production on the album Chant Down Babylon and contributes, with Spragga Benz and Marley siblings Stephen, Cedella, Damian and Ky-Mani Marley, to a version of “Master Blaster” on the Stevie Wonder tribute album Conception.

He releases the albums Lion in the Morning, A Time & Place and Awake. Lion in the Morning includes songs he writes or co-writes in full, while A Time & Place combines roots reggae with jazz influences and draws on conversations with friends and fellow musicians. His work is rooted in reggae and reflects spiritual themes and social change.
