Joyce Manor are an American punk rock band from Torrance, California, formed in 2008 and active since then. Their line-up includes Barry Johnson, Chase Knobbe, Matt Ebert, Pat Ware, Kurt Walcher and Jeff Enzor. The group’s sound sits within punk rock, pop punk, emo, indie rock, punk and folk punk.

Formation and early releases

The band’s first release appears in 2010, and it quickly becomes known for fast, energetic songs shaped by influences including Jawbreaker, Descendents, Weezer, Thin Lizzy and The Smiths. Joyce Manor joins 6131 Records in 2010.

Albums and label history

Their self-titled debut album arrives in 2011 and receives strong critical and fan attention. Punknews names it its 2011 Album of the Year, and it appears on many year-end best-of lists. For the next record, Of All Things I Will Soon Grow Tired, the band moves to Asian Man Records, with Big Scary Monsters handling the UK release. That album appears in 2012 and includes a cover of The Buggles’ “Video Killed the Radio Star”.

Joyce Manor later sign to Epitaph Records for Never Hungover Again, which is produced by Joe Reinhart and features Frances Quinlan of Hop Along on the cover. The band’s fourth album, Cody, is produced by Rob Schnapf and includes the single “Fake I.D.”. Their fifth album, Million Dollars to Kill Me, is released through Epitaph Records.

Line-up changes and wider attention

The band’s members are listed as lead vocalist and guitarist Barry Johnson, guitarist Chase Knobbe, bassist and backing vocalist Matt Ebert, and drummer Pat Ware, with Kurt Walcher later replaced by Jeff Enzor on drums in 2014. Joyce Manor also draw attention in punk and indie circles for their opposition to stage diving, after interrupting several sets to call out stage divers.
