Josie Field is a South African singer-songwriter whose work starts from folk roots but also draws on rock, country, jazz, gospel and electronica. She emerges in the mid-2000s with a style that sits between commercial radio appeal and a more personal, independent approach to songwriting.

Career

Field begins to attract attention with her debut album, Mercury, which appears in 2006. Two years later she releases Leyland, a more intimate second album. Across these records, she moves between accessible songs and material that sits outside the mainstream, and she builds a reputation for balancing critical recognition with broader popularity.

Her songs include radio-oriented tracks such as “Every Now And Then” and “10 Years” from Mercury, and “Hey Man” and “Law Of Attraction” from Leyland. Her third album is in preparation in 2010, with Kevin Leicher as longtime producer and with hints of a broader sound that includes gospel and electronica.

Live work and collaborations

Field performs both as a solo artist and in duo settings with Leicher, and she also plays with a band. She supports UK adult contemporary artist James Blunt as well as appearing in smaller club venues across South Africa. She also looks to expand her work through collaboration with choirs or other artists.

Recognition

Her profile includes multiple award nominations, among them two nominations at the 15th Annual MTN South African Music Awards in 2009, including Best Female Artist. She also receives a nomination at the 2010 MK Awards for the video for “Law of Attraction”.
