Joshua Schmidt is a composer and songwriter best known for Adding Machine, a musical adaptation of Elmer Rice’s play The Adding Machine. He writes the music for the show, with a libretto by Jason Loewith and Schmidt.

Adding Machine

Adding Machine first opens in 2007 at the Next Theater in Illinois in a production directed by David Cromer and starring Joel Hatch, Cyrilla Baer and Amy Warren. It then opens Off-Broadway at the Minetta Lane Theatre, with previews beginning in February 2008 and an opening in late February. That production is also directed by David Cromer and includes many of the original cast members.

The show receives six Lucille Lortel Award nominations in the 2008 season, more than any other production, and wins the Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Musical, among other honours.

Film work

Schmidt also composes the songs for the movie-musical The End, directed by Joshua Oppenheimer, whose previous films include The Act of Killing and The Look of Silence.
