Josh Turner is an American country music singer-songwriter and guitarist from the United States. He is born in 1977 and is associated with contemporary country, country, country gospel and gospel. His music is often described as South Carolina Lowcountry in style, and his voice and delivery are frequently compared with Johnny Cash.

Early life and education

Turner is born Joshua Otis Turner in Hannah, South Carolina. He moves to Nashville in 1996 to study music at Belmont University. While studying there, he meets Jennifer Ford, whom he marries in 2003.

Recording career

Turner releases his debut album, Long Black Train, in 2003. The title track, “Long Black Train,” reaches number 13 on Billboard’s US Country chart and remains on the chart for more than 40 weeks.

His second album, Your Man, follows in early 2006. Its title track becomes a number one country single, and “Would You Go With Me” becomes his major hit and helps the album move toward platinum status. He also releases “Me and God” as a Christian-themed single, first on Christian radio and later on country radio.

“Time Is Love” is the first single from his fifth studio album. The song is released digitally and then sent to radio in early 2012.

Style and themes

Turner’s work draws on country and gospel traditions, and his stated South Carolina Lowcountry influence is a recurring part of his musical identity. His material includes explicitly Christian themes as well as mainstream country songs.
