Jónsi

Jónsi is the stage name of Jón Þór Birgisson, an Icelandic musician from Reykjavík, born in 1975. He is the lead singer and guitarist of Sigur Rós and also appears in the duo Jónsi & Alex, as well as projects including Liminal and Dark Morph. He is known for a soft falsetto voice and for work across ambient, contemporary classical, dream pop, experimental rock, post-rock and rock.

Background and early influences

Birgisson grows up in Iceland in a family that is not especially musical. His early listening includes The Beatles played at double speed, and he also listens to and plays along with Iron Maiden records.

Solo and group work

As a solo artist, he releases Go in 2010. Alongside his solo work, he remains best known for his role in Sigur Rós, where his singing and guitar playing help define the band’s sound. He also works with Alex Somers in Jónsi & Alex.
