John Power

John Power is a singer-songwriter from Liverpool, England, best known for his work with The La’s and Cast. Born in 1967, he moves between rock, alternative, indie, folk and skiffle-associated material, and he is also associated with the broader singer-songwriter tradition.

Early career with The La’s

Power plays bass guitar with The La’s before becoming better known as a frontman elsewhere. The La’s achieve success in 1990 with the single “There She Goes” and their self-titled album, which develops a cult following. He is later listed among the members of The La’s again when the band reforms.

Cast

In 1993, Power leaves The La’s to form Cast. With Cast, he sings, plays guitar and writes songs. The group issues four albums and a string of successful singles before splitting in 2002. Power is the frontman of the band during its 1990s run.

Solo work and later projects

After Cast split, Power releases a solo album, Happening For Love, in 2003. In 2006, he releases Willow She Weeps on Tanuki Tanuki Limited, following the limited-edition 7-inch single “Jumpin Bean” backed with “Willow Weep”. A further album, Stormbreaker, is also noted in the record.

Other activity

Power returns to The La’s on bass when the band reforms in 2005. He is also associated with The Justice Collective.
