John Murry is an American singer-songwriter, composer and co-owner of Evangeline Records. He is born John Miller Murry in 1979 in Tupelo, Mississippi.

Background

Murry begins singing in church in Tupelo at the age of five. As a child he learns to play Tom Petty’s “Free Fallin’” at 12. He later moves to Memphis, Tennessee as a teenager and starts playing in bands from about 1999.

Career

In 2004, Murry moves to the Bay Area of California and starts performing solo material. The following year he begins recording with producer Tim Mooney, who is also the drummer in American Music Club, and works at San Francisco’s Closer Recording Studio. There he meets singer-songwriter Chuck Prophet.

He collaborates with Bob Frank on a series of recordings released under the name Bob Frank and John Murry. His debut solo album, The Graceless Age, appears on Evangeline Records in 2012 and is listed by Uncut as one of the best records of that year.
