John Hayward

John Hayward is a UK rock vocalist and musician from the United Kingdom, associated with The Wild Family. He performs as a solo artist and has also headed more than 30 bands over the course of his career.

Early life and musical development

Hayward’s interest in music begins in childhood. His earliest memories involve his father writing songs for him to perform and record, and making cassette covers so he can play the part of a rock star. By the age of 11, he creates his first solo multitrack recording using two boom boxes, electric drums, guitar and microphone. That recording is an original heavy metal track shaped by bands such as AC/DC, Suicidal Tendencies and Megadeth.

At 12, he discovers punk music, and his musical focus shifts toward punk and hardcore. He later says music is the main driving force in his life, and he spends many years in independent recording and live performance.

Career

Hayward’s early years include work in chaotic and self-destructive surroundings, including crime, drugs, violence and heavy drinking, but he continues to make music throughout. In 2009, after reconnecting with an old friend, he begins writing songs with a softer edge than his earlier punk rock and hardcore material. He starts performing this new material with only voice and guitar at local crowds in Halifax.

He performs regularly at open mic nights in Halifax, playing guitar and singing songs including “Georgia Blue,” “Caroline” and “Step Out.” His solo work reflects both his earlier punk and hardcore background and his later move toward a more melodic sound.

Style and approach

Hayward is described as a perfectionist and a self-directed creator. He performs on voice, guitar and other instruments, and his work draws on heavy metal, punk, hardcore and pop punk. His songwriting and performance are strongly tied to personal experience, including his move from a troubled youth to a more settled present.
