John Dignam
John Dignam is an acoustic guitarist, singer, composer and songwriter from Swansea, South Wales, in the UK. He starts playing guitar at the age of 14, first on a second-hand Fender Squier Stratocaster, before moving to acoustic guitar and teaching himself pieces by players he admires including Tommy Emmanuel, Chet Atkins and Jerry Reed. He begins performing at local clubs, cafes and restaurants, and also writes his own material.
Performances and touring
Dignam performs at a range of UK events and venues, including the London Jazz Festival, Tommy Fest UK, the Mumbles Jazz Festival, Gower Guitar Festival and Colston Hall. He also appears at Tommy Fest in Rietberg, Germany, and joins Jon Gomm and Byron Johnston on a UK tour in March 2010. One of the notable points in his live career is an invitation to play at the Chet Atkins Appreciation Society Annual Convention in Nashville, where he is one of two UK performers, alongside Martin Taylor.
Collaborations and development
In 2005 he meets Tommy Emmanuel, performs for him, and later shares the stage with him at a UK concert. Emmanuel remains an important mentor and supporter. Dignam also develops a reputation for incorporating vocals into his live set, with audiences regularly asking for his vocal songs.
Recordings and radio
His debut CD, Down to earth..., is released in 2010. His original music receives radio play on stations across the UK, including BBC Radio 2.
Education
He is awarded a scholarship to attend Berklee College of Music.
