John '00' Fleming

John '00' Fleming is a UK trance DJ and producer from Worthing, now based in Brighton. He is associated with electronic music, including goa trance, house, progressive house, progressive trance and psytrance. His career begins in his mid-teens, when he is asked by his school headmaster to play an under-18s night. After that first appearance, he becomes a resident at Sterns in Worthing and remains involved there through the 1980s.

Early career and club work

While still a teenager, Fleming plays alongside DJs including Carl Cox, Fabio and Grooverider at Sterns’ Interdance night. As acid house and rave culture develop, he performs at events including Fantazia, Raindance and Ibiza from 1987. In 1990, aged 20, he is diagnosed with lung cancer and steps away from dance music to focus on recovery. After two years in hospital receiving chemotherapy, he goes into remission and moves to Florida, where he returns to DJing with regular dates at Miami’s Cameo Theatre and guest appearances along the East Coast and in Canada.

He returns to the UK in 1992 and begins a seven-year residency at the Zap Club in Brighton, working there with Dave Clarke, Tall Paul and Eric Powell. He later plays for major club brands including Ministry of Sound, Gatecrasher and Gods Kitchen, while also appearing in the underground goa trance scene alongside Astral Projection, Juno Reactor and Floorplay.

Production and releases

Fleming builds a production career as well as a DJ profile. His singles include Alpha 5 and Lost In Emotion, followed by Free, which enters the UK Top 40. In 2002 he releases Belfast Trance, a rework of Simple Minds’ Belfast Child with Jim Kerr’s blessing, and The Theme from SupaKane by SupaKane, his project with Healey, both on Virgin Recordings.

He also works in the studio with Christopher Lawrence, M.I.K.E., Astral Projection, Astrix and Wizzy Noise.

Labels, aliases and compilations

In 1998, Fleming and Russell Coultart set up JOOF Recordings, an underground trance label. He also records and performs under or alongside the names 00.db and S2POR.

His compilation work includes Licensed To Thrill on Automatic Records, For Your Ears Only on React Music, volumes 13 and 14 of the Reactivate series, and compilations including The Real Ibiza, Sunny Side Up and The Best Trance Anthems… Ever. He also releases Progressive Euphoria and White Label Euphoria, with the latter becoming the second biggest-selling title in the Euphoria series.

Broadcasting and writing

Fleming’s radio show, Global Trance Grooves, becomes a major programme on DI.FM and the Ministry of Sound radio network, and is broadcast in prime time on Ministry of Sound’s Saturday schedule. He also writes columns for Future Music magazine and contributes reviews and technical features to iDJ. In addition, he records guest mixes for BBC Radio 1, Galaxy and Kiss FM.

Recognition

His work is recognised in charts including Tranceaddict and DJ Magazine. He is known for moving between corporate events and major psytrance festivals while maintaining links to his goa trance roots.
