Joan as Police Woman is the stage name of Joan Wasser, an American singer-songwriter, violinist and producer from Biddeford, United States. She is born in 1970 and works in the indie rock sphere, with singer-songwriter material at the centre of her output.

Career

Wasser is known for her album Real Life. Before and alongside her solo work, she appears in Dambuilders, Mind Science of the Mind and Those Bastard Souls. Her first project in which she writes as well as fronts a band is Black Beetle, formed in late 1997 with the remaining members of Jeff Buckley’s band; the group completes an eponymous album that is never released.

She also performs live and in the studio with a wide range of artists, including Lou Reed, Tanya Donelly, Sheryl Crow, Dave Gahan, Elton John, the Scissor Sisters, Antony and the Johnsons, Joseph Arthur, Mary Timony, Rufus Wainwright, Jeff Buckley and Adam Green.

The name Joan as Police Woman comes from a fancy dress party at which she dresses as an NYPD officer.
