Jimpy is a DJ and producer who moves between tech house and trance. He begins clubbing in Ibiza at the Star Club, now Eden, at the age of 15, and later attends key UK venues and events including Shellys in Stoke-on-Trent, DJ SS’s Total Kaos at the Starlight 2001 in Leicester, The Eclipse in Coventry, and raves such as Dreamscape, Vision and Amnesia House.

Career

After moving to Cardiff in 1993, Jimpy becomes resident DJ at The Hip’po Club, where he develops his style alongside names including Sasha, John Digweed, Paul Oakenfold, Sven Väth, Sister Bliss, John Kelly and Laurent Garnier. In 1996 he leaves the club, takes a break for a year, and then returns to playing in South Wales and internationally.

In 1997 he enters the UK Ministry of Sound mixing championships and finishes second. In 2000 DJ Magazine ranks him 54th in the world. He also launches weekly club nights, Enter the Dragon at Vision, which starts in February 2000 with Paul Oakenfold, and later ROAR.

Appearances and media

Jimpy plays a range of clubs and tours, including Slinky, Cream, Back to Basics, Renaissance, Miss Money Penny’s, Godskitchen, Gatecrasher, Good Greef, Escape Club, Naughty But Nice, Republica at Bakers, Labyrinth in Zurich, Queens in Hong Kong, the Watapalava tour across the USA, Club Quality in Helsinki and Club SOI in Northern Ireland. He also appears on clubbing channels and programmes including MTV, Rapture and Club@Vision alongside Andy and James Mitchell of the Crazy Club at the London Astoria.

Production work

Alongside DJing, Jimpy sets up his own recording studio and signs to labels including Whoop Records, Southeast, Star 69 in New York, Deviant, Dorigen and Celsius. His tracks and remixes appear on releases associated with Sasha, Paul Van Dyk and Hernan Cattaneo, including Global Underground 13, Politics of Dancing and Live from Buenos Aires. His remix credits include Tomcraft’s “The Circle”, Victor Simonelli’s “Do You Feel Me” and Lenny Kravitz’s “Believe”. His work also features in the Hollywood film The Beach.

Style

He describes a set style that changes with the event, the other DJs and the time of play, covering everything from dirty tech house to driving, euphoric trance.

Later activity

After taking a break from the music scene to focus on other projects, Jimpy returns to a smaller number of selected dates.
