Jim Lockey & the Solemn Sun are a British folk-punk band from Gloucestershire. They form as a quintet and build their sound around country-folk, punk, alt-country and hardcore punk influences, combining hook-led harmonies, country-punk rhythms and politically minded lyrics. Their performances are known for an energetic, direct style that sometimes moves from the stage into the crowd.

Early releases and recognition

The band release their debut album, Atlases, in 2010 on istartedthefire records. The album is produced by James Towler, who is described as an MPG Engineer of the Year and double Grammy-nominated producer. The record receives critical attention and airplay from Steve Lamacq on Radio 2, Kerrang Radio and BBC Introducing. They are also named BBC Gloucestershire Introducing’s Band of 2010.

Live activity and touring

Over a short period, the band tour widely across the UK and play alongside Mumford & Sons, Frank Turner, Dry the River, Johnny Flynn, Alessi’s Ark and Pete Doherty. They appear at festivals including Big Chill, Wychwood, Y-Not and 2000 Trees, where they play one of the best-attended performances on the second stage. They also return from a support run on Frank Turner’s sold-out UK tour, which includes an NME Awards showcase.

Style and influences

The band draw on a mix of alt-country, folk and punk traditions. Their approach combines a strong political ethic with an intense live style, and they are often compared with Bright Eyes, Frank Turner and Billy Bragg.
