Jesse Welles

Jesse Welles is a singer-songwriter from Ozark, United States, known for folk and americana songs that focus on protest and other topical subjects. Born in 1992, he first builds his career in rock-oriented projects before emerging as a solo folk artist.

Early career

Before performing under his own name, Welles appears on 15 albums, 8 EPs and 7 singles. He fronts two bands, Dead Indian and Cosmic-American, and also releases music as Jeh Sea Wells and Welles. Much of this earlier work is more rock and roll in style than his later folk material. He is signed to 300 Entertainment in 2012 and leaves the label during the Covid pandemic.

Shift to solo folk songs

After leaving the label, Welles describes himself as burnt out and considers quitting music, but returns to songwriting. He starts a TikTok page in 2023 with cover songs, then moves into a run of original material after his father survives a heart attack. His videos are usually filmed in the woods and feature him alone with a guitar, sometimes joined by harmonica.

Public attention and style

Welles gains a cult following through songs that react quickly to news and public events, often with satirical language and emotionally direct writing. His work covers subjects including Palestine, US foreign policy, obesity and over-prescribed medication. His breakout song “Singing the News” helps drive his wider recognition, and he continues to release a steady stream of songs while touring. He also busks on street corners as part of his live activity.

Reception and comparisons

He is compared to Bob Dylan, John Prine, Woody Guthrie and Phil Ochs, and his original songs draw strong audience response. Commentary on his work often frames him as a contemporary protest singer with a plainspoken approach, and he is associated with the idea of a voice of conscience in troubled times.
