Jerome Hill

Jerome Hill is a London-born DJ, producer and soundsystem figure associated with techno, acid, IDM, pumpin techno and electronic music. He starts buying hip hop, house, breakbeat and early European techno after getting his turntables in 1990, inspired by the pirate radio sounds of London. In 1994 he links up with the London soundsystem JIBA, where he develops the scratching and mixing style that becomes one of his defining traits.

DJ work and style

Hill builds a reputation for originality and for sets that mix a wide range of styles. His performances draw on Chicago techno, the Relief and Dancemania sound, the “no-school” approach associated with Brighton and Edinburgh, and a heavy party-focused style that also brings in hip hop, ragga, old hardcore and other dance music. He is described as equally at home with techno, breaks, soul, hip hop, ragga, electro, old skool, house, comedy electronica and rock and roll, although he usually tailors his selections to the music policy of the night.

He becomes a resident DJ at the London club night UGLYFUNK and plays internationally in countries including Brazil, Spain, France, Poland and Venezuela, as well as across the UK. When not touring, he plays at London warehouse parties for soundsystems including Bedlam, Manik, Black Sheep and Restless Natives.

Record shops and labels

Hill manages the Camden Town record shops Trackheads and Dragon Discs for seven years, specialising in techno and electro. He is also linked with Super Rhythm Trax.

Collaborations and projects

He performs as one half of Groove Asylum with Rob Stow. The pair appear on DON’T001 and DON’T002 and on other labels, and they also play live PA sets.

Recognition

Hill receives a mention in DJ Magazine’s Top 100 DJs 2003 from Chris Liberator and Dave the Drummer as someone to watch. He also plays alongside a number of techno artists including Landstrumm, Rother, Forshaw and Subhead.

Brazil

Hill leaves the UK in early 2004 for Brazil, where he lives and continues to travel back to Europe regularly. He remains active in promoting and discovering new music there.
