Jenny Hval

Jenny Hval is a Norwegian singer-songwriter, writer, journalist and sound artist from Oslo, born in 1980. Her work moves between music, literature, visual art and performance, and she is often described as operating across these different forms at once. She studies creative writing at the University of Melbourne and literature at the University of Oslo.

Recording career

Hval first releases two albums under the name Rockettothesky: To Sing You Apple Trees on Trust Me Records in 2006 and Medea on Trust Me Records in 2008. She then issues Viscera under her own name on Rune Grammofon in 2011. Her early solo work is associated with experimental and art-pop approaches, and her listed genres also include ambient pop, avant-folk, avant-garde, dream pop and electronic music.

Collaborative projects

In 2012 she releases the debut album by Nude On Sand, a band project in which she collaborates with Håvard Volden. She is also a member of Lost Girls.

Writing and other work

Hval makes her literary debut with Perlebryggeriet (The Pearl Brewery), published by Kolon Forlag in 2009. She also writes for magazines and newspapers including Vinduet, ENO, Bergens Tidende and Klassekampen.

Visual and performance work

Her wider artistic practice includes sound installation and collaborative art projects. In 2010 she contributes to War Song by Valerie Tevere and Angel Nevarez, performed at the Ultima Festival in Oslo. In 2011 she creates the sound installation ENTER/ Flesh for the larger installation ENTER Sonic Tank at Tou Scene in Stavanger. That same year, she works with writer Inger Bråtveit on Kvit Søppel (White Trash).
