Jasper Carrott

Jasper Carrott is an English comedian and performer from Birmingham, known for stand-up, humour and spoken word. He is born Robert Davis in Birmingham and is educated at Moseley School. He also describes himself as “world famous in Birmingham”.

Early work and move into comedy

He starts out in music by setting up his own folk club at 16, called The Boggery, in Solihull, where he performs folk songs and also acts as MC. Over time, his audience banter becomes more prominent than the songs themselves, and he becomes better known as a comedian than as a singer.

Other work

He also works as a musical agent in partnership with Harvey Andrews, under the name Finger-Me-Gig, and manages acts including Decameron.

Recording career

In 1975, he has a surprise UK top-five hit with the novelty single Funky Moped, written by Chris Rohmann. The B-side is a risqué spoken monologue that parodies the animated children’s television series The Magic Roundabout. The BBC bans that recording, and that ban is widely believed to help its commercial success.
