Jape

Jape is the Dublin, Ireland-based project of Richie Egan, who is also a member of Redneck Manifesto. It begins in 2003 and continues as a group with Egan and Neil O'Connor. The act is associated with indie, alternative and dance rock, and is also described as Irish downtempo and folk rock, with a sound centred on electronica and stoner folk influences.

Releases

Jape’s debut album is Cosmosphere, released in 2003 on Volta Records. It is followed by The Monkeys In The Zoo Have More Fun Than Me in 2004 on Trust Me I'm A Thief. A third album, Ritual, appears on V2 Records in 2008. The track Phil Lynott is promoted as a potential Christmas number one in Ireland and becomes a live favourite, although it does not chart strongly.

Notable songs and collaborations

Jape’s best-known song is Floating, which is covered by The Raconteurs and The Mighty Stef. In December 2008, Jape writes a song with David Kitt for the Christmas compilation An Indiecater Christmas, issued by Indiecater Records.

Recognition and live profile

Ritual wins the 2008 Choice Music Award. Jape also makes a debut appearance at the SXSW festival in Texas in 2007, which adds to interest in the project’s development.
