Jane Remover is an American singer, songwriter and producer from Newark, United States, based in Chicago. Their music draws on digicore, experimental hip hop, experimental rock, hyperpop, indie pop and indie rock, and is also described as electronic-infused pop, hip-hop and rock.

Background

Jane Remover begins making music production work in 2011, initially inspired by dubstep producers including Skrillex, Kill The Noise and Virtual Riot. In the mid-2010s they move into different styles of EDM, later naming Porter Robinson as a major influence. By around 2018 their production becomes more trap-oriented, with inspiration from artists such as Trippie Redd, Earl Sweatshirt and Tyler, the Creator. Their work later shifts towards digicore.

Early releases and SoundCloud period

In early 2020, Jane Remover starts self-producing and releasing music on SoundCloud. One of their early solo tracks, “what's my age again?”, gains attention after being shared on Twitter. Their first project, the EP Teen Week, appears in February 2021. “homeswitcher” reaches 100,000 streams on SoundCloud within its first two weeks.

After a series of standalone singles, they announce their first full-length album, Frailty, and release singles for it in June 2021. The album follows later that year through deadAir, after the tracks “how to lie”, “pretender” and “search party”. Frailty receives critical attention, including year-end and early-2020s rankings from Pitchfork.

Name change and later albums

On 27 June 2022, Jane Remover retires a previous pseudonym, introduces the name Jane Remover, and also states a gender transition. On the same date they release “Royal Blue Walls”. They also revise Teen Week, removing four songs in October 2022 because of discomfort with the project in its original form. Their next single as Jane Remover, “Contingency Song”, follows in November 2022.

Jane Remover opens for brakence on the Hypochondriac tour from late November to late December 2022. In August 2023 they release “Lips” and announce their second album, Census Designated. The album contains 10 tracks, including an album version of “Contingency Song” and a remastered, extended version of “Cage Girl”. The title track appears in September 2023 with their first music video under the Jane Remover name, directed by Quadeca. Census Designated is released in October 2023.

Aliases and side projects

Jane Remover also works under several aliases, most notably leroy, also used as c0ncernn because of streaming-service reuploads. Under this name they make sample-heavy EDM mashups across three albums, using sounds such as 2010s pop songs, viral videos and their own music. The release artwork for each song is a screenshot from the television series Daria, which gives rise to the term “dariacore” for this style. Three compilation albums covering forty tracks are released between December 2020 and May 2022, and a fourth album, Grave Robbing, first airs on NTS Radio in July 2023 before appearing on the leroy SoundCloud page.

They also use the fictitious band Venturing, presenting it as an American rock group formed in Britton, South Dakota in 1990. In this backstory the band has six members: Steve Dales on drums, Barney Cruz on bass, Fawn, Vonnie Fitz and Daisy Knight on guitars, and Melanie Dizzy on vocals. The group breaks up in 2002 after the death of drummer Stephen “Steve” Dales. Venturing’s music is styled differently from Jane Remover’s main work, blending rock, slowcore, ambient and shoegaze.
