James Yuill

James Yuill is a UK electronic and folk-influenced solo artist associated with folktronica and indie electronica. His music brings together acoustic songwriting and programmed beats, drawing on influences that range from Nick Drake, Radiohead and Sufjan Stevens to Justice, The Chemical Brothers and Richard David James, also known as Aphex Twin.

Career

Yuill releases music on Moshi Moshi Records, an independent label based in the UK. His album Turning Down Water For Air appears on the label in 2008 and helps establish him within London’s folktronica scene. He receives attention from music press outlets including NME, Dazed and Confused and Clash, which names him “Best Newcomer 2008”.

UK radio support follows, with Huw Stephens, Colin Murray, Zane Lowe and John Kennedy among the DJs playing his work. He also performs at festivals and events including SXSW, Radio One Big Weekend, Latitude Festival and Club NME, alongside a wider live schedule in venues in the UK and abroad.

Live performance

His live setup is a one-person performance built around voice, acoustic guitar, laptop programming and effects. The arrangement is described as compact enough to fit into a reconditioned guitar case.

Remixing

Yuill also works as a remixer. He creates remixes for Au Revoir Simone, Tilly and the Wall, David Holmes and Rod Thomas, as well as other emerging UK acts.
