James Holden

James Holden is an electronic musician, producer, remixer, DJ, label founder, bandleader, mix engineer and software developer from Exeter, United Kingdom. His work spans electronic music, IDM, minimal techno and trance, and he is also described as a progressive trance producer. He records on Border Community and Easy Access.

Early career and DJ work

Holden begins his professional career while still at university, when his early 12-inch record Horizons is picked up by a Sony Music-backed label during the trance period of 1999. He becomes known as an international DJ and as a remixer for major artists including Madonna, Britney Spears, Radiohead, New Order and Depeche Mode. His profile is also tied to his Border Community label and to his remix of Nathan Fake’s The Sky Was Pink, which becomes a notable dance track in mid-2000s electronic music.

Albums and changing live format

In 2006 he releases The Idiots Are Winning, a set of dancefloor-oriented tracks and DJ tools that is presented in album form. His second album, The Inheritors, appears in 2013 and marks a turn toward a more expansive, rhythm-heavy sound. After this, he moves away from DJing and performs with a portable live modular synth setup, joined by Tom Page on live drums and occasional saxophone from Etienne Jaumet.

The Animal Spirits and collaborative work

For the recording sessions of The Animal Spirits in 2016, Holden expands into a six-piece group and forms The Animal Spirits as a spiritual jazz-influenced ensemble. The record is made through live takes in a single room, with no overdubs or edits. His wider collaborative work includes performances and projects with accordion player Mario Batkovic, clarinettist Waclaw Zimpel, Moroccan gnawa musicians Maalem Houssam Guinia and Maalem Mahmoud Guinia, and tabla player Camilo Tirado. The verified membership list also includes Ogenki Clinic, Mainline, Caribou Vibration Ensemble and Slide Productions.

Later solo work and production tools

In 2023 he releases Imagine This Is A High Dimensional Space Of All Possibilities, a solo album that draws on rave music and also references parts of his earlier catalogue. Alongside this, he returns to remixing after a long break, working on material by XAM Duo, GoGo Penguin and Lost Souls of Saturn. He continues to perform with a live setup built around self-designed and 3D-printed computer and modular synth cases, custom modules and self-written digital plug-ins. Holden is a long-time user of Cycling74’s Max/MSP and uses it to build sequencing and synthesis systems for live performance, which he also plans to make available to other musicians through his website.
