James Deane is a singer-songwriter based in Guildford, near London. He starts out in the power-pop four-piece Snug, alongside future EMI recording artist Ed Harcourt, before moving on to a solo career focused on songwriting.

His writing is shaped by classic artists such as Crosby, Stills & Nash, Neil Young and The Band, and he builds acoustic-based songs with direct, honest lyrics. The material is described as carrying a world-weary quality and as aiming to tell personal stories in simple terms. His live performances are associated with a voice influenced by early Neil Young and Bruce Springsteen.
