James Brute is the former front man of The Brute Chorus and continues as a solo artist after that group. His solo work carries on the folk and blues interests associated with the band, but in a more stripped-back form. He writes songs that still draw on figures from the Old Testament and Greek mythology, while moving toward a more intimate sound.

As a performer, he presents material with either an old electric guitar or in unaccompanied voice. His songs focus on love, lust and loss, and his work is described as moving into darker territory than before.
