Jain is a French pop artist from Toulouse, France, with roots in Madagascar. She is born in 1992 and moves through several places that shape her music: she relocates to Dubai at the age of nine, then moves to the Congo during secondary school, where she begins experimenting with music under the direction of Mr. Flash. After finishing school, she returns to Paris to study the arts.
Style and influences
Her music combines a range of influences drawn from French techno, Arabic percussion and African rhythms. She works within pop, dance-pop and folk pop, and her sound reflects the different places she has lived.
Early releases
Jain releases her first EP, Hope, in 2015. It includes the singles Come and Makeba. Come reaches number one on the French singles chart and is certified Diamond in France. Makeba is inspired by Miriam Makeba, the South African singer and civil rights leader, and its video, filmed in South Africa, receives a Grammy nomination.
Debut album and later work
Come and Makeba are later included on Jain’s debut studio album, Zanaka, which is released in November 2015 and produced by French singer-songwriter Yodelice. The album is certified 3x Platinum in France. A deluxe edition follows in November 2016 and adds further tracks, including Dynabeat.
Her second album, Souldier, is released in 2018. Its lead single, Alright, appears before the album, and Souldier reaches number one on the French albums chart.
