Jah Free is a UK reggae and dub musician associated with Southend-on-Sea. He begins his career in the mid-1970s as a singer and musician in the Southend band Tallowah. That group later develops into Bushfire, an eight-piece band that performs its own material through the 1980s.
After internal conflict in the band, he continues as a solo artist and focuses on writing his own lyrics and music. His work is connected to the local reggae and dub scene at a time when there are few local reggae outlets, with most activity centred on sound systems and collectors playing other artists’ records.
He is linked with the Roots Hall venue, described as a key place in the area’s dub culture and a regular reggae radio session. His style and reputation place him within roots reggae and dub reggae traditions.
