Jaguar Sun

Jaguar Sun is the project of Ontario musician and multi-instrumentalist Chris Minielly. He makes indie pop with experimental dream pop and alt-pop elements, using layered guitars, synths and vocals in a solo setup that develops from his own recording and production work.

Background

Minielly starts out making electronic music under the name Lone Beach, then changes direction as he adds more instruments and moves away from those roots. He records at home in a bedroom studio and works alone from the beginning, using music as a way to manage social stress, work and his graphic design studies. He later renames the project Jaguar Sun and develops it as a thesis project during his final year at school.

Releases

Jaguar Sun’s debut EP, That Night, is a three-track release that looks back on an old relationship and college memories, with songs that sit between indie rock and alternative rock. A full-length album, This Empty Town, follows in 2020 on Born Losers Records. In 2021, Jaguar Sun releases the collaborative EP Bloom with Jesse Maranger.

Style and influences

Minielly draws on artists including STRFKR, Youth Lagoon and Panda Bear. His music combines dreamlike textures with alt-pop songwriting, and is marked by a focus on arrangement and self-directed production.
